How often does your office receive applications from undocumented students?: Our applications are open on a rolling basis. Anyone can apply at any time.
Does the campus police enforce immigration law?: No.
Are there organized groups or clubs comprised of or advocating for undocumented students in your school?: We currently do not have a club or organization advocating for undocumented students on campus. Students have the ability to start their own club following the procedures listed in the Student Organizations Handbook.
Does your school provide distance-learning options for deported students to complete their degrees?: We cannot guarantee that distance-learning will be available for every course (it would depend in the instructor's decision) but we do have a number of fully online programs.
Does your school share student immigration status with ICE?: No, we do not share student immigration status with ICE.
Does your school provide confidential legal support to students with immigration law questions and issues?: We have legal counsel that serves our Student Association and they are able to direct students to appropriate legal support if requested. The University does not provide legal advice to students.
Admissions Information
Does your school provide merit aid specially for undocumented students?: The Admissions Office does not award any merit aid specifically for undocumented students. All students are reviewed for merit scholarships.
Are undocumented students considered international or domestic?: Undocumented students are considered to be domestic students.
What other piece of advice would you give an undocumented student hoping for admission at your school?: Please keep in mind that we do not consider national origin or immigration status as a factor in admissions. There is no federal law preventing undocumented students from attending a college. SUNY values diversity and vows to support undocumented students in their pursuit of higher education.
How would their status affect their application?: Their status would not affect their application at all. We consider undocumented students to be domestic students.
Are there any restrictions on merit aid for undocumented students at your school?: No there are not any restrictions.
Is there a special contact point for undocumented students?: Anyone in the Admissions Office is happy to help undocumented students with whatever they need!
Are undocumented students eligible for need-based aid?: If the students are undocumented and New York State (NYS) residents or have attended a NYS high school, they can apply for the NYS Dream Act, which can possibly make them eligible for NYS need-based aid such as TAP and Excelsior. They will not be eligible for aid from the FAFSA unless they are refugees/asylees/parolees.
